Q: What is changing with NetAccess’ NTP service? #
We have upgraded our Network Time Protocol (NTP) infrastructure to improve accuracy, reliability, and geographic redundancy.
The NTP service is now running on two independent servers, one hosted in Hamilton and one in Toronto.
This upgrade ensures higher uptime, lower latency, and improved resilience during maintenance or network events.
Q: What NTP hostname should I use? #
For most customers, the recommended setting is simply:
ntp.nas.net
This hostname automatically directs your device to the closest and most available NTP server.
Q: Can I use IP addresses instead of the hostname? #
Yes.
If you prefer to specify servers manually, you may use the following two IP addresses:
216.145.96.61 (Hamilton NTP server)
216.145.109.13 (Toronto NTP server)
We recommend configuring both IPs so your system can fail over if one site becomes unavailable.
Q: Why did you split the service between Hamilton and Toronto? #
Running NTP servers in both cities provides:
- Geographic redundancy
- Improved reliability
- Lower latency for customers in different regions
- Failover protection / High availability
- Better load distribution
This ensures accurate time synchronization even during scheduled maintenance or unexpected outages.
Q: Do I need to change anything on my equipment? #
Most customers do not need to make any changes.
If your systems already use:
ntp.nas.net
then they will automatically benefit from the upgraded NTP infrastructure.
If your equipment requires static IP configuration, update it to one or both of the following:
216.145.96.61
216.145.109.13
Q: Is there a cost for using the new NTP servers? #
No. The service continues to be included free for NetAccess customers.
